a little about me…

Hi, I'm Mary.

I'm happiest when I'm making something.

Over the years I've taught/am teaching myself to garden, sew, knit, make baskets, bake bread, restore old furniture and plenty of other things along the way. I’m not an expert at any of it—I just really love figuring things out and making things with my hands.

A few years ago, we landed in this house, and I have a pretty big vision for what it could become someday. Gardens to wander through, rooms filled with things i've collected or made, flowers from the garden on the kitchen table and cozy places where people want to sit and stay awhile.

It's going to take years. And I'm okay with that.

The Saturday Home is my journal of making that vision come to life—one project, one room and one Saturday at a time.

Along the way, I try to follow a few simple rules:

Do it yourself whenever you can.
I love learning how to make, build, grow and fix things rather than immediately buying new or hiring it out.

Do it thoughtfully and thriftily.
A beautiful home doesn't have to require an enormous budget. I'd much rather hunt for the old piece, reuse what I have or figure out an inexpensive solution. I think thats actually way more fun.

Do it little by little.
There's no rush to finish the house or garden. Part of the pleasure is watching it become what I've imagined over time.

I'll share what I'm making, what I'm learning, what works—and probably a few things that don't.

Maybe it'll inspire you to putter around your own home a little too.
